It’s Conference Final time, and every hockey fan knows it’s often a new guy, a third-liner or someone breaking out of a slump at just the right moment who becomes a playoff hero.

Each of the four teams left owe a great measure of success to such a player. We salute these remaining heroes – and their beards – for what they’ve achieved so far, and for helping their teams’ dreams of bearded glory live on.

Stanley Cup Beard Watch: Exposing the NHL’s playoff scruff cheaters

The old adage says that “cheaters never win. ”

Maybe. But when it comes to hockey players with beards, everyone is a winner in our book … even these grifters.

They might have gotten a jump start on the competition, but we ain’t mad, bro.

We still appreciate and admire them all the same.

To keep the status quo, this week we salute one NHL alternate captain from each remaining playoff team. These men are first in our books — leading by example on and off the ice, above and below the chinstrap.

In this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, the fates select which beards will have a chance to realize their true potential.

Five teams remain. Five beards (OK, six) have emerged as top contenders for Beard of the Year.

None of these teams made it past the second round last season, so the promise of greater bearded glory shines bright. Some faces are familiar, some are new. All are hairy.

Ready to lead a cavlary charge.

April 19, 2012 –This early in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, beards are like second-round berths and regulation wins – shiny hopes and dreams. It’s barely Week 2 and, at best, most players are sporting only peach fuzz or the beard equivalent of an off-season weekend bender.

Some have already grown all they’ll ever manage.

But a few prime specimens have begun to emerge as top contenders for the coveted Beard of the Year award. Can they go all the way? Or will they be forced, defeated and follicle-free, to the back nine before they have reached their full potential?

Pants and I are proud to announce that during the playoffs, WUYS will be writing a weekly post on Puck Daddy!!

So much of this right now.

It’ll be about the best (and worst) playoff beards, which is one of the things we simply adore about hockey players.

I heart beards so much that I have been know to accost totally strangers in bars and ask them if I can touch their beards.

Creepy?  Absolutely, but I just can’t resist.  Especially when they are so fluffy.

Special thanks to Greg Wyshynski from Puck Daddy for giving us this great honor.  According to him, he feels our “particular brand of whimsy” regarding this topic would be “sick.”

I need my West Coast honey … You turned down a rumored 9 years /61.2 million. That would buy you a Krispy Kreme Franchise! OK – Tim Hortons – you could re-name it Doughty’s Donut Holes. I don’t care. Just sign. I know you don’t want to be tied down, well, not in that sense, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more, my little hip shaker! But why all that training and diet coke drinking over the summer if you aren’t planning on playing? So please, I’m waiting for you to fill my cream puff – NOW. TYVM.

BTW – his comment when asked about the fresh ink, “Hogwarts looks fun!” Um …. Brent, I hate to break it to you but it ain’t a real place. The Easter Bunny isn’t either and  the Tooth Fairy, well, yes she is because hockey players made her real like the Velveteen Rabbit. So keep putting those teeth under your pillow at night, big boy. It pays the rent.

Anyway, here are some delicious dishes on what our favorite men do before or during the game. Feel free to tell us what you do to help them out! I yell at the TV because I KNOW OVI can hear me now!

I have to add this update from Puck Daddy: (link) because I am totally siding with Sidney on the  ODC issue on shaving. No one gets between me and the razor.  Sorry guys.

So what caused this bare-naked outburst? Turns out that the guy (assistant coach Greg Pankewicz from the Colorado Eagles) was madder than a wasp because one of the linesmen tackled his player after a fight.

Granted the player was starting to go after another player, but Coach P was felt it was uncalled for.

So he proceeded to do the only rational thing – disrobe like a crack head on a bad trip...

No shirt.  No shoes.  No Problem, folks.
