Penguins 2, Flyers 1 – OT

The past two seasons, the Flyers have ended big win streaks for the Pens.  Not last night!!  It took a while, until Crosby PPGed so hard he almost fell over.  He is a little back-heavy, after all.

pens1 .gif by jordanstaals.tumblr.com

Not for nothing, Sid got all these points without even brushing his hair.

sc1

Then everyone including Tyler Kennedy couldn’t believe that Tyler Kennedy scored the OT game-winning goal.  Penguins win streak extended to 12 games!

tk1

Let’s love on Matt Niskanen for a minute.  First of all, his middle name is Norman.  It makes me think of the calf from City Slickers every time:

“Seat belts, Norman! Seat belts!”

city slickers

Secondly, he’s been aces lately.  Check out last night’s highlights [video] –  the puck-drag  around the shot block at 1:34, then the behind-the-back to TK for the winner!  Nisky had the game-winner last week vs. Washington, giving him 4 goals in 25 games. Last year he scored 4 in 75.  He needs a haircut something awful, but look at that smile:

nisky .gif by christkunitz.tumblr.com

Also, last night… Capitals 3, Rangers 2 – SO

WELCOME BACK, PIGLET!  At least we hope so.  Mid-last week, Nicky Backstrom had only 3 goals on the year.  THREE GOALS?

Washington Capitals v New York IslandersYes. Horrifying.

But last night, NB19 scored the Caps’ first and last goals – the second being the 4th round shootout winner.

nicky1

So while the bonus goal won’t count toward the season total, we know it happened.  That’s 3 goals and 3 assists in 3 games!  Give us the return of this face and the Caps could give the playoffs a run for their money after all.

nicky3

I will also grudgingly point out that Ovechkin has 6 goals in 5 straight games.  The Caps have won 4 of those.  Maybe (maybe, maybe) he CAN lead this team, at least on the scoreboard.

ovi

There’s no way out for the Caps without Ovi and Backstrom and no more time to wait.  They jumped 3 spots in the standings this weekend, and are now 2 points out of 8th place.  They host the Islanders, Sabres and Flyers this week – all teams just below them in the East.

Please let this elevator keep going up.

piglet

Side note: If you’re not following Ovi’s fiancée Maria Kirilenko (@mkirilenko), you are missing the most excited Caps-related Tweets out there.  She might even be enough to make me like him.

So of course we were in the front row.

Other highlights included Nicky getting pissed because you said he looked like a woman in his roster photo:

Global Warming: Sweden http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/11/21/global-warming-sweden/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/11/21/global-warming-sweden/#comments Wed, 21 Nov 2012 17:41:58 +0000 http://wuys.wpengine.com/?p=13194 Meanwhile in Russia, guess who remains perfect and is scoring a lot of points?

Of course it’s Piglet.  He looks pretty fond of Ms. Pink Recorder-And-Mani combo too.  Or maybe he’s just happy with himself for having 5 goals and 5 assists in his last 4 games for Dynamo Moscow.

This, this, a thousand times this. [and as a gif]

Backstrom had two goals yesterday, including the one below.  Please note that I will pirate the dance showcased at the :32 mark as my own future Nicky goal celebration, if they Caps ever unbreak my heart.

Last week, Nick had a hatty.  Karaoke your own commentary on this one.

Ovi has a recent OT GWG and 3 assists, for a total of 19 points in 18 games, and Dynamo holds the overall KHL lead.

You can very helpfully follow @KHL_Hockey for English-language updates on all the teams, and they’ve got a full English website too – en.khl.ru.  My goodness, a hockey league that seems to appreciate their fans. What will they think of next?

BINGO – Viktor Stalberg has left the Swedish Elite League to play for KHL’s Atlant Moscow [link] – @HCAtlant.  And the team is Tweeting like, well, we would if he turned up at our office.

Yes, even in that hat.

Definitely a part of our interview process:

He’ll make his debut today vs. Jakoub Voracek’s team Lev Praha (Czech Republic).  If I see a link to the live stream, I’ll Tweet it.

Tampa Bay’s Victor Hedman, who is not photographed often enough, assisted on all three goals for Barys Astana in their most recentwin.  He also apparently gets mistaken for Tom Brady in the US [link].  We can kinda see it.

And just because it exists, here are 9 1/2 minutes of Gabe speaking Swedish (where he’s playing).  The Swedes must reinforce their electronics because this shit would melt my flat-screen right off the wall.

This went beyond just hair-pulling ...

I don’t hate fighting as much as some other people. What I dislike is hypocrisy. Philly has never made any apologies for who they are. What shocked me was  Matt Cooke managed to stayed out of the fray.

Pittsburgh needs to decide quickly if they are going to play as a team to stay in the play-offs or protect Sidney Crosby from injury because they can’t do both.

But other than that, to lighten the mood there used to be someone who did Hockey Cats. So to continue the tradition, here is the weekend in hockey cats photos:

Mittens likes to live on the edge ... it's better than the tea-cup ride in Disneyland!

Hey there handsome! yes, I embarrassed you in front of your team, that was me

Ok, I’m starting this off with I don’t hate the Vancouver Canucks. I just happen to LOVE the LA KINGS – even more so after seeing them last night. Look at the play-off beard!

do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Mr. Canuck fan? no wonder you're with another dude at this game!

If Pants was worried about me when we went to see Ovi in SJ in my outfit, she should have chaperoned me to Vancouver in my harmless Drew Doughty/LA KINGS t-shirt last night because holy Cheesus! I was literally one of 5 Kings fans in the house and the only one with a sign. You could see it anywhere in Rogers Arena.

F%ck you camera man! Telling me I suck. I made it on the Jumbotron anyway! so suck it ... we won too!

The one question I kept getting asked last night was – Why do you like the LA KINGS? Really? I saw Mr. Cherrie hold his breath hoping against all hope I wasn’t going to say something snarky so I waited until now: (our two little friends above the exit sign where AWESOME!) HI!

1. LA has a real goal tender – Quick doesn’t cry either!

Koppie tried flipping me a puck during warm up! totes love for you.

2. LA has Kopitar who can stick handle in a phone booth and I believe is about to cut loose because he is certainly due

He's all class and no sass!

3. LA has Dustin Brown with 2 shorties on them in their barn

Capt. Downtown Brown was trying not to laugh at my sign. Quick had a giggle too along with the rest of the team giving Doughty shit.

4. LA has Jeff Carter and Mike Richards now
5. LA has Drew Doughty (of course) 😉

Drew also tried to flip me a puck during warm-ups!

Any questions? Didn’t think so.

This was totally staged for my pleasure because they were all laughing and trying not to look at me. Hello -Paging Kings Fan of One.

See ... they started laughing and 22 (Trevor Lewis) is a stone cold FOX

But I would like to give a shout out and a thanks to the gracious Canucks fans who let me stand in front of them during the warm-ups so I could watch. They were very nice about it and I truly appreciated it.

No other horror movie celebrates Hockey with such bad assery!

Last night was a heart breaker when the Caps lost in OT to Boston – I’m sure Ovi had this Nightmare:

No, not the floating head of death again!

And Seidenberg tried to take Ovi out with this hit but he found that weebles wobble but they don’t fall down! If Ovi can knock Jagr into next year at the Olympics, you’ll have to try harder Siddy-bergy than this:

As for it being FRIDAY THE 13th – I know we ran this before, but there is no such thing in my world as too much Kris Letang so for your FRIDAY THE 13th MOMENT OF ZEN:

Dawn, Ovi - sorry for the bad season. I do better in play-offs. I promise. BOOM! hahahahahahah

So when this campaign started the feedback was terrible so they adjusted it STAT because it was like the MasterCard ad, the Hockey Discover Card and “I Just Want My Pants Back” had a drunken three way, someone got pregnant and no one wanted to take responsibility for the monster that came of it.

Hockey fans will tell you straight up when something stinks.

I get TPTB wanted to include the fans but thank god we bascially got a bastard child of HISTORY WILL BE MADE! I don’t want to see faux Hollywood replicas of what they think we are doing in our homes/bars/favorites hockey watching spots. Trust me – WE KNOW. And it wasn’t what they were showing us.

I want to see Ovi telling me what he’s GOING to do in the play-offs.

Dear NHL - stilling waiting for Letang's solo "Because of the Cup" ad. Statistically speaking - Pens can win without St. Sid but not with out #58. Just sayin'

I want to see Kris Letang brush his sexy hair out of his face and smile at me as he skates at the screen.

I want to see Erik Karlsson and his glorious mullet, all awkward and sh&t.

Dear little man, may you win the Norris if Kris Letang (a complete dark horse but I wish would win) doesn't.

Hell, I’d even take Jagr saluting me! (not quite but see below for you hard core philly fans – bless you all!)

You've grown on me like a fungus but you make me laugh - which is hard to do!

It isn’t quite that but it will do for now. So for your viewing pleasure if you haven’t seen these yet:

An Open Letter To Ted Leonsis http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/03/09/an-open-letter-to-ted-leonsis/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/03/09/an-open-letter-to-ted-leonsis/#comments Sat, 10 Mar 2012 00:53:30 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=9520 I simply have to vent this and get it off my, ah, proverbial chest ladies. As the resident Ovi fan and Captials fan, I know this will come as shock, but I AM SO MAD AT HIM, at them, at the WORLD and have been for some time and I just have to say and get it out.

An open letter to Mr. Leonsis,

I say this with as a fan of Alexander Ovechkin, first and foremost, and then of hockey.  When you fired Bruce Boudreau, a little piece of me died because no matter how the mainstream media spun it, we all know that it was because of player issues – e.g. Ovechkin.

Boudreau is a great coach. He will probably be the best coach you will ever have. He was not the problem. We all know “What the problem is with the Washington Capitals.” The real question is what is going to be done about it?

For five years I’ve watched Ovechkin go from a great player to a player with a great attitude. It pains me to say that but having been an athlete myself on a team, and a captain as well; you have to lead by example.

I had hoped Mr. Leonsis would have bucked the system and shook things up by NOT firing Boudreau, showing some loyalty, having some balls, and fixing the real problem. If he had, his team may have actually had a shot at the play-offs. Sometimes the Alpha dog needs a good swat to the nutsack to get back in line and lead the pack.

But as it stands, the fans have watched Boudreau excel in Anaheim, their beloved team implode under the tutelage of Dale Hunter’s mess and Ovi still stands around on defense, stands around on offense, waits for his teammates to pass the puck to him and still misses it when they do. His attitude that he has to do it all has got to stop because guess what? He can’t, he certainly doesn’t and there are guys out there who can and are doing it better now.

He still has time on his contract where he can be traded. Perhaps before you fired Boudreau you should have used that bargaining chip to get your Alpha dog back in line. Now he’s the Rick Nash of the East Coast. No one will want that bad golden apple, no matter how good it might taste. He’s still too costly, you don’t know how he’ll perform and there still might be a worm in there somewhere. It’s not an imponderable conundrum. It’s just a conundrum.

FIX IT. PLEASE.

 Missing BB,

DC

Uphill Battle http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/03/09/uphill-battle/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/03/09/uphill-battle/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2012 12:59:45 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=9471 The emotional roller coaster that is the Washington Capitals delivered another Ovechkin overtime winner last night.  They should give out blood pressure medication with programs.

As I said after the Islanders games, we’ll take the point(s).  But the 60 minutes of sloppy, uneven play and constant turnovers it took to get there are infuriating.  When the Caps win, it’s luck – lucky that the other team didn’t beat you to it (like Carolina) because you certainly gave them enough chances.

Washington had three shots in the 2nd period.  Three!  On a goalie making his NHL debut!  The 3rd period was stronger – the Caps held the Bolts to just three shots and John Carlson played some of the best shifts I’ve ever seen from him.  The effort was buoyed by the same combination of the Loud Goat pleading and Unleashing the Fury  at exactly the right time.  Fired up?  HELL YES.  But why does it always take 52 minutes for the Caps to get that way?

Aucoin - 2 goals in 12 games. Knuble - 3 goals in 53 games.

Speaking of 52… from our seats in the Verizon Center, we saw Mike Green double-up on this hit to Brent Connolly.  We could not see his elbow and there was no replay or penalty, so we had no idea Mike was misbehaving.  What did people do before Twitter?

This is really what the Caps need with back-to-back games this weekend.  Do you want to see Hamrlik and Schultz as a defense pairing?  Are the Caps worried that we’ll be bored if they win before overtime?

While I’m at it, Semin is a disaster – and on this team right now it’s tough to stand out for that.  The six year old kid who played in the intermission Mites on Ice game looked a lot like Sasha Fierce, except that he had a goal.  Maybe we could throw a 28 on him and no one would notice… until he scores.

The Caps play Boston (Sat), Toronto (Sun), NYI (Tues) and Winnpeg (Fri) this week.  People have been saying “must win” for weeks now – Washington is running out of time to prove them wrong.

Let's Get Loud http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/12/08/lets-get-loud/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/12/08/lets-get-loud/#comments Thu, 08 Dec 2011 16:30:19 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=8259 You guys are the best.  Mike Green starts Tweeting and our phone rings off the hook!  FOUND PANDA, people!

Press three for Intern Jeff Skinner.

Mike was as excited as Gator and I about the Caps putting together a serious, solid win.  Ovi had a goal (haven’t typed that in a long time), Nicky and Jeff Halpern each 1 G/1 A, Troy Brouwer had a Gordie Howe hat trick and iCarly rocked 1 G/2 A.  That’s two three-point games in a row for John!  Someone told him Gator wants points for Christmas.  He had a beast of a game and was named First Star.

Santa's coming?! I know him!!

Sasha Fierce missed two games with a minor shoulder injury, and was back in the lineup last night with 15+ min of ice time.  No points for Semin (in his last 5 games), but dear God we can’t have everything!  Settle for the Caps’s PK clicking, killing 6 of 7 minors.  Overall their PK ranks 24th in the NHL – and it’s usually Sasha in the box anyway.  Could it be the Capitals are getting back on track?

Favorite fake Twitter of the day.

Tweeting while biking it’s easy (I once texted Gator from the elliptical, almost resulted in me going on injured reserve), but it’s worth it.  Last night gave everyone a lot of hope, something the Caps sorely need.  Now if they can string together a few wins under Hunter, Ovi can figure his shit out and Mikey can get back in the lineup, we’ll be in business.  And if he can’t play, at least he should cheer where we can hear/read it.

Favorite real Twitter of the day.

(Instances in which I will forgive the your vs. you’re error are limited to big wins, hockey players and social media.  And so begin my dropping standards.)

New Coach, New Girlfriend, New Attitude? http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/12/01/new-coach-new-girlfriend-new-attitude/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/12/01/new-coach-new-girlfriend-new-attitude/#comments Thu, 01 Dec 2011 18:17:56 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.wordpress.com/?p=8160

Let's get this party started

So Ovi has a new coach, a new girlfriend so let’s hope that leads to a new attitude! Right? Well if the first game was any indication, I might jump ship – WHAT?! Just kiddding. That sound you just heard was Pants and Chuck simulatenously dropping over.

but only one named Letang

I’m  so excited for the battle of the hotties tonight so remember to get your half rack ready and you HAVE TO DRINK everytime they mention St. Sid. This is mandatory. Then tell us how it went – if you recover – because I’m telling you, you’ll be amazed!

The Catzipals new attitude? Let's hope so

I can’t decide if I’m going to watch the Pit feed or the Caps feed because I kind of a have a crush on Staggy. He’s a glass is- over-flowing kind of guy. But Joe B. and Locker make me laugh because they get side-tracked alot. It won’t matter which feed you watch because St. Sid will be ALL OVER it. Let’s hope  they all borrowed Ovi’s razor through. SRSLY!

even i think he looks better this way

Here’s the line up and I KNOW! WHERE’S LETANG!?! *SUPER SIGH* Ovi is going to be upset that his real boy toy is not playing. How can he pull off his jersey and play slip and tickle with his favorite pengiun?

the most epic bromance - EVER

 PENGUINS

Asham-Park-Adams
(Vitale, MacIntyre)

CAPITALS

On a side note, the Anaheim Ducks scooped BB as their coach so I wish him the best of luck and since every knows that I also have a crush on that ‘other’ #8 Teemu, GO DUCKS! DD is #8, Teemu is #8 and Ovi is #8 and Letang is #58 …. go crazy 8’s!

It’s the same sort of surprise when you fall out of a tree hit the ground.  It was probably inevitable, but you’re still a little shocked to find that this is the time.   You thought it might take longer, maybe the laws of gravity would alter.  Maybe someone would catch you.

Sorry, very busy.

Let me preface this with an Unpopular Hockey Opinion:

I strongly dislike Alex Ovechkin.

Obviously I have some kind of Mike Green-and-geography induced Stockholm Syndrome going on that makes me a Caps fan.  And Ovi can be an electric player whose raw talent raises the game of his teammates.  I can’t say I hate him.  But I think his lackadaisical attitude permeates the Caps and makes his teammates salmon swimming upstream against the blahs.  Except Semin, who busts out his inner tube and cruises the Lazy River.

Now, before Dawn calls in a hit on me, this is not permanent.  Ovi shows flashes of greatness that have nothing to do with the way he scores – he can lead this team.  Most nights he simply chooses not to.  And that’s why BB had to go – he couldn’t lead Ovi.  Ovi’s contract and personality make him more powerful than the head coach.  Or at least they did.

So while I generally despise the firing of head coaches to shake up teams, I think GMGM made the correct and necessary move here.  If Dale Hunter comes in with a take-no-shit attitude, he could zip this team into the superhero suit they should be wearing.  Ovi made BB look bad.  This is what happens to people who make Hunter look bad:

I am also in favor of taking the C from Ovi.  If you’re making waves, might as well make ’em big.  I believe the C belongs to the hardest working guy on a team – not necessarily the highest profile or most prolific scorer.  I don’t recall anyone ever saying that about Ovi.  (Hate on Crosby all you want, but….)  Brooks Laich or Mike Knuble seem like better candidates to me.  And it would send a clear message that Hunter and McPhee lead this team, not The Usually, Mostly, If He Feels Like It Great 8.  Piss him off.  Make Ovi earn the C back and he’d be unstoppable.

PS: I know there are more issues with the Caps that just Ovi, but I believe in trickle-down solutions.

Birthday Boy: Nick Backstrom http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/11/23/birthday-boy-nick-backstrom/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/11/23/birthday-boy-nick-backstrom/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 18:38:14 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=8089 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NICKY B!

Thank you to @thisisourjamdc for reminding the zombies here at WUYS that today is the 24th birthday of our favorite Swede, Piglet Nicklas Backstrom.

We worked till 2:30 AM, were up for work at 5:30 AM.  We both travel at the crack of dawn tomorrow.  This is the only reason Gator and I are not going to Nicky’s Birthday Party tonight against Winnipeg.  We are sad to miss this:

Nicky did send us his wish list.  If you’re shopping for presents, here are Nicky’s Most Wanted:

1. Hugs

Bonus points if Mikey is involved.

Minus points if Ovi is involved.

2. Toys

White socks in the red laundry... just let us do it for you.

3. Winter Wear

Very popular in Sweden.

4. Hair Product

Only kidding, he has plenty!

… and anything else you can think of that matches his team-leading 16 assists and 22 points.  The Caps finally won a game on Monday and while things still look like The Hangover (the tiger is totally in Mike’s bathroom), perhaps Nicky’s birthday magic can make it two in a row.

The next major holiday is Christmas.  I’m writing a letter that specifically asks for more of this:

Free Mustache Rides for Movember http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/11/22/free-mustache-rides-for-movember/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/11/22/free-mustache-rides-for-movember/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 02:34:59 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=8078 Since Ovi is obligated to shave with his Gillette contract –  he’s out. Plus he’s in dire need of a hug.

don't worry Ovi, we all have those days

And Kris Letang has been shaving which is a total shame because I sometimes like the wolverine look – but I can wait for the playoffs because that look can get old really fast.

with or without, it don't matter

So that leaves my only other honey which is fine because he’s totally rockin’ the 70’s prono look just fine – brown-chicken-brown-cow.

oh yes, i'd ride that

or this into the sunset

yippee kiya cowboy!

But there’s still time for the rest of us to take the challenge as I pointed out last year! 😉

they all took the challenge - that's why they're smiling!

Thriller Night http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/11/02/thriller-night/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/11/02/thriller-night/#comments Wed, 02 Nov 2011 15:09:19 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=7827 Nicky, I’m sorry I passed up your game to go to the movies.  Tower Heist was funny, but we could have rented it on DVD and had a WUYS office slumber party.  Still, it’s just one night.  There is no need to try to kill me.

When I got into the car and turned on the radio, the Caps had been down 3-0 and battled back to 4-2. It’s pretty rare that I listen instead of watch the game and let me tell you, it’s intense!  They’re yelling and I’m yelling and just imagining everyone crashing and skating while I should be driving.  Probably right under Tweeting for things you shouldn’t do behind the wheel.

Brouwer scored (more points for Wides, fantasy darkhorse).  The Caps couldn’t convert a delay-of-game minor but they were hammering away.  Then at 19:18, Nicky B scored the game-tying goal [link].  Look how open he was!  Look at Joel Ward freaking out!  Cue dance party in my car.

Overtime: two minutes of the announcers having a heart attack live on-air.  Brilliant.  At 2:18, Nicky scored again to win the game [link].  Look at the head tip where he tells Ovi to switch sides!  I nearly drove off the road.  The only place more dangerous would have been section four-oh-whatever where I probably would have taken Gator out with me.

Nicky, post-game [link]: Be cuter. I dare you.  Also maybe take the sticker off that says you have a small-to-medium head.  Just sayin’.

Nicky leads the Caps with 4 G + 10 A (8 points in his last 5 games).  Wideman is right behind him, killing it for my fantasy team with 3G + 7A.  (Look out Mike, someone else is piling up points at your blue line.)  Trust that Nicky is going to STRUT in that celeb fashion show tonight.  Well deserved, Backs.

If you’re interested in controversy that isn’t really controversial, Ovi was benched for the end of regulation and not happy about it.  Flurry of commentator hairspray and coffee cups.  He did get on the ice for OT and assist on the game-winner, so errrrybody calm down.  Sometimes you do what works.  Read more about Ovi/BB here [link].

Dawn would be proud of me for posting this.  She’s all kinds of busy with a shiny new job while Ovi is just hanging around the WUYS office in fancy dress, waiting for her to play air hockey.  He’s all shined up and… wait.  Oh.  Here he is from Friday carving a pumpkin (@DesignoAbe):

How many cameras are on you?

Mikey Monday: Blustery Day http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/10/17/mikey-monday-blustery-day/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/10/17/mikey-monday-blustery-day/#comments Mon, 17 Oct 2011 19:42:34 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=7512 It’s a really slow day and this picture has been lurking around my inbox forever.  Dawn sent it, presumably trying to impress us with Ovi’s shorts.  Or because he’s wearing a Coach’s Corner t-shirt.

But all I see is this.

Am I wrong?  There’s this:

And this.  I could go on all day.

Mike has 2 points in 4 games and the Caps are undefeated.  They play the Panthers tomorrow night, so let’s hope they keep this little streak alive.
