Hockey Movies – What's Up, Ya Sieve? http://whatsupyasieve.com WE’RE GIRLS. WE LOVE HOCKEY. WE WENT TO BOSTON UNIVERSITY, SO WE WATCH MIRACLE A LOT. Fri, 07 Oct 2016 18:09:07 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.7.4 Return of the Segs http://whatsupyasieve.com/2013/11/05/return-of-the-segs/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2013/11/05/return-of-the-segs/#comments Tue, 05 Nov 2013 17:43:59 +0000 http://wuys.wpengine.com/?p=18288 After his abrupt and somewhat surprising departure from Boston this summer, tonight marks Tyler Seguin’s return to Boston.  It’s been four months since the fireworks of the July 4th trade that sent Seguin to Dallas Stars.  The pain of that day still stings at times, but like any resilient New Englander, I just have to pick myself up off the floor, drink my iced coffee, and move on with my life.
I can’t lie – it hasn’t been easy.  The fangirl in me dies a little bit every time I see him in that Stars’ sweater.  It just doesn’t feel right or real to me.  Green is SO not his color.  He looks MUCH better in black and gold.
But the hockey fan/blogger in me understands full well why things happened the way that they did.  In an ideal world, every player I loved would stay with their teams forever, win multiple Stanley Cups & all the trophies, and it would be all rainbows and puppies and adorable babies.
I pride myself of understanding a lot about the sport and about how things work from a management perspective, so I try to be as objective as I can in situations like this.  I can’t take it personally.  I don’t have to like it, but I have to accept it.
Boston’s depth, while a tremendous asset, stifled Seguin.  When you’re playing behind Krecji and Bergeron, it ain’t exactly easy to distinguish yourself.  Seguin was a boy amongst men and he wasn’t doing enough to make himself irreplaceable.
In Dallas, Seguin has the opportunity to be the BMOC, and let’s face it, we all know that he’ll relish it like a hot dog.  He is playing on the top line with all-star Jamie Benn, while in Boston he was relegated to the 3rd line.
I hope that the trade served as a bit of a wake-up call for Seguin. While we can’t really blame him for the partying and the hijinks he got himself into – I mean the guy is 19 years old, rich, Stanley Cup Champ, hot like fire in a city filled with college girls – the maturity just wasn’t high on the list of priority  For a team that needs to win and win NOW, the Bruins just didn’t have time to wait for him to grow up.
Chara ain’t getting any younger and with their 2011 Stanley Cup win and their Finals appearance last year, this Bruins team needs to strike while the iron is hot.
In Seguin, they had a talented player not quite living up to his potential but with an exceptionally high value for a team looking for a young center.  What Bruins were desperately lacking was a strong winger to complement their top line centers.
Enter Dallas Stars and Loui Eriksson.  Some phone calls were made. A deal was reached and it was so long Seguin and hello Loui.
The season is still young so who knows what the ending will be to this hockey tale.  Seguin has 15 points so far with the Stars.  Eriksson has only 3.
The season is long and I’m not worried.  I think that each team is going to get exactly what they needed.

Oh hell. http://whatsupyasieve.com/2013/02/26/oh-hell/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2013/02/26/oh-hell/#comments Tue, 26 Feb 2013 18:24:54 +0000 http://wuys.wpengine.com/?p=15056 “Suite & Tie” has not grown on me the way “SexyBack” did, where I decided it was the best song since “Bye Bye Bye” and played it ten thousand times.

That’s about to change.

While I’m bringing back 2006 dance jams, can I resurrect SWAG for a second? (Then kill it again immediately?)

What I really need is a .gif of Bryz (:50 mark) suiting up like it’s Awkward Family Christmas Photo time.

Or maybe Danny putting on his socks (one foot at a time!) all lonely-like next to this chair.

OhmygodIcan’t.  Cry/laugh/gasp, so undignified at work.

Bless Pam (@sunnyinnj), who is both my Flyers enabler and sponsor.  And bless Always Sunny Ariana for this compilation.  It would take me a month to make, with regular visits to my cardiologist and liquor store.

Happy Friday the 13th – Best Day for Hockey! http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/04/13/happy-friday-the-13th-best-day-for-hockey/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2012/04/13/happy-friday-the-13th-best-day-for-hockey/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2012 19:02:38 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=10046

No other horror movie celebrates Hockey with such bad assery!

Last night was a heart breaker when the Caps lost in OT to Boston – I’m sure Ovi had this Nightmare:

No, not the floating head of death again!

And Seidenberg tried to take Ovi out with this hit but he found that weebles wobble but they don’t fall down! If Ovi can knock Jagr into next year at the Olympics, you’ll have to try harder Siddy-bergy than this:

As for it being FRIDAY THE 13th – I know we ran this before, but there is no such thing in my world as too much Kris Letang so for your FRIDAY THE 13th MOMENT OF ZEN:

How Did We Miss This? "Breakaway" – New Hockey Movie! http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/10/03/how-did-we-miss-this-breakaway-new-hockey-movie/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/10/03/how-did-we-miss-this-breakaway-new-hockey-movie/#comments Mon, 03 Oct 2011 04:10:27 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.com/?p=7246 We didn’t even get advanced notice and it opened in Canada this week already! It stars Rob Lowe and hottie Camilla Belle! Along with Indian comedian Russell Peters. The previews look hilarious with the usual culture clash of Indian kids who love hockey but aren’t allowed to indulge because it’s not ‘cool’.

So if any of our Canadian friends went and saw it this weekend, let us know!

Foxy Friday: Doug Dorsey http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/07/29/foxy-friday-doug-dorsey/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/07/29/foxy-friday-doug-dorsey/#comments Fri, 29 Jul 2011 18:57:31 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.wordpress.com/?p=6216 It’s so freakin’ hot in DC that all I want to do is turn on the A/C and watch a movie.  This movie.

Admit it, you have this movie memorized.  You’ve been known to say “Parlez-vous Olympics?!” and “Doug can read.” in conversation.  You want Doug to put his hands “WHERE?!” and you don’t care if he calls you Rita or Anita in the morning.

You wish there was really a bar called the Penalty Box full of crotchety locals who think you just said “finger painting.” You’d love a Bobby Hull game sweater and you’d break up with Hale the minute Doug walked in (or just because his name is Hale).

For Doug Dorsey, you’d definitely put the Pemchenko Twist in the program and you’d always remember who said it first.  They just don’t make movies like this anymore.

Pass the Popcorn http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/06/24/pass-the-popcorn-2/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/06/24/pass-the-popcorn-2/#comments Fri, 24 Jun 2011 11:23:45 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.wordpress.com/?p=5870 This is almost enough to make me see Mr. Popper’s Penguins.  After I sat through The Dilemma just in case the in-game footage showed Toews (it doesn’t, don’t rent it).

"I know, Popsicle. I miss him too."

That is 3 hours and 7 minutes of shame. Or triumph, depending on who you are rooting for.

The teams also scored 14 goals between them. And the Bruins won.  So that pretty cool.

A win tonight would give the Killer B’s a 7-point lead over the Habs in the Northeast Division.  The Canadiens  have 15 games left which pretty much makes it impossible to overtake the B’s for the divisional title.  It also guarantees the Bruins with a top 3 playoff seeing for the Eastern Conference playoffs.  Right now as it stands, they’d meet the New York Rangers in the first round of the playoffs.  The only upside of that it getting to see Matt Gilroy, our 1st Foxy Friday honoree.

TIMMAY is most likely to the starting goalie tonight despite taking a stinger off his glove hand in practice and Tukkaa threw a tantum at the morning skate.  Rask took a shot to the chest, chucked his stick 20 rows into the seats (no pun intended), and storm off the ice.

No word of if he’s actually injured.  Or just having a hissy fit.

Tyler Seguin is again a healthy scratch for the Bs.  What Up With That, Claude? If you are going to keep scratching him, why not just send him down to Providence so he can a least get some playing time?  I’m sure the popcorn at the Garden is bomb, but don’t you think Seguin will get more from actually playing, even if it is with the Baby B’s?
Upside to  riding the bench – he’ll have more time to hit the weight room.

Hello folks. Welcome to the Show. The Gun Show.

Jailbait.

All Coming Back to Me Now http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/02/24/all-coming-back-to-me-now/ http://whatsupyasieve.com/2011/02/24/all-coming-back-to-me-now/#comments Thu, 24 Feb 2011 18:29:59 +0000 http://whatsupyasieve.wordpress.com/?p=3371 Oh boy.  Alex Kovalev is back with the Penguins. Ray “I get s*** done” Shero acquired him from Ottawa for a conditional draft pick [link].  On top of James Neal and Matt Niskanen, Shero is running down the dream here.  Today is Kovalev’s 38th birthday so I hope he wished for a playoff race.

The way back machine.

Kovalev played in Pittsburgh from ’98-’03, between stints with the NY Rangers.  As a Pen he racked up 149 goals and 197 assists in 344 games.

Disclaimer: I hate the NY Rangers. I especially hated them growing up in Upstate NY and I probably said “1940!” a hundred thousand times.  It has been many moons, but I have never really recovered.  And I’ve always disliked Kovalev, even when he was a Penguin.  Now I am prepared to eat my words.  Come on Alex, and show me how wrong I’ve been for cough…20…cough years.

Still makes me shudder.

The Pens may be close to getting Chris Kunitz back from injury, and none too soon.  They are still missing forwards Asham, Johnson, Tangradi, Letestu and Jeffrey.  Defenseman Paul Martin is out, and this morning they announced Brooks Orpik has a broken finger and will miss 4 weeks.  They have a few other injuries too – no one you’ve ever heard of.

Chuck, Beth and I are going to Pittsburgh for the March 25 weekend games.  We may be called in to demonstrate the skills we’ve learned by repeatedly watching The Cutting Edge.

Exactly, Kate.
